A doctor may prescribe the same drug as an otherwise healthy individual to treat obesity in adults and adolescents over 18 years of age, according to new research.
The study, published in the journal Obesity, is published online March 5.
The study found that taking the same drug is effective for weight loss in adults over 18 years of age. The results, which will be presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Study of Obesity (AAS).
According to the study, doctors generally prescribe the same drug to treat obesity in adults and adolescents over 18 years of age. This is because weight loss is often a symptom rather than a disease.
“We know that obesity is an often-overlooked complication of metabolic syndrome,” said lead author John P. Gebhart, MD, chairman of the American Academy of Family Physicians. “However, obesity is not a disease but rather a problem that affects many of the same organs, including the heart and brain.”
Pfizer’s drug, which has been known to cause weight gain, is not approved for use in children.
“The results in this study reflect the growing awareness that obesity is a serious medical condition,” said Gebhart.
“It’s just not true that weight loss, in this country, is the only thing that can really benefit someone,” said Dr. David J. H. Rieder, M. D., chairman of the Division of Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. “It’s very difficult to get a patient to stop eating.”
Dr. Rieder said that some people in the U. S. are overweight and that the number of patients who experience weight gain is growing.
“There are a number of things that can happen to patients who are overweight and have obesity that could cause them to stop eating,” he said.
The study is the first published in the New England Journal of Medicine that compares the effects of Xenical versus Orlistat for patients who are overweight and obese. The drug is sold as a capsule pill, or Liletta, and is the brand name of a drug sold under the brand name of Alli.
The drug works by blocking the hormone that promotes overeating, and prevents the body from absorbing more fat. A typical dose is one capsule taken once a day.
The drug is usually taken three times a day. It can be taken with or without food. The drug is taken when the patient is in the early stages of losing weight, such as during a binge. The drug is only effective in people with obesity.
The study, which was presented online March 5 at the AAS, looked at 1,000 patients who had taken Xenical or Orlistat in the past year, at doses of one capsule or one capsule twice a day for 6 weeks.
The drugs were not associated with significant weight loss.
The results were published in the March 10 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, while the study was reported by the journal Obesity. The study is published online March 5.
“When patients are on Xenical or Orlistat, they are not losing weight, they are losing weight because they’re losing a lot of weight,” said Dr. Rieder. “It’s like the patient is saying, ‘Oh, there’s no one else that can lose that much weight. What am I going to lose?’ ”
In addition to the study’s results, a study published in the journal Obesity in April found that taking the drug for 3 months and then stopping once a month was not effective.
“These results are good news for the patient,” Dr. D. Rieder said.
The study, which was published online April 10, is an analysis of data from the National Institutes of Health and published in the journal Clinical Practice. The researchers said they believe the results may be due to differences in the way patients take the drug in comparison to the way they eat.
